I was reading something recently when I came across “mating name.” I paused, furrowed my brow, and tried to figure out what it meant. I’d never heard of it. After much pondering, I finally realized that the person meant maiden name, as in a married woman’s original last name; the name she had when she was a maiden.
No, I’ve never seen that one before. I’m still somewhat blown away by it.
I’m afraid that computers (and yes, texting) have allowed an entire generation to fail basic English. “Mating name: … *snort!*
It makes more sense than “maiden.” I say go with it.
